From First Tooth All The Way Up To Teens

Taking excellent care of your child's teeth is extremely important. Studies show that poor oral health care in children can lead to impaired school performance and poor social relationships, therefore, our dental practice is very eager to give advice on how to make teeth strong and the importance of developing healthy eating habits and other ways to prevent dental disease. It is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) that a dental visit should occur within six months after the presence of the first tooth or by a child’s first birthday. Regular dental office visits and preventive dental treatment such as sealants (see below) and fluoride application are very important to maintaining optimal dental health for children.

Additionally, our office works toward the maintenance of primary teeth (baby teeth) until they are naturally lost. This is due to the importance they serve in permitting children to chew properly and therefore maintain good nutrition, their role in speech development, and the maintenance of space for the eventual eruption of the permanent teeth.

Our staff will work to make office visits pleasant and enjoyable for children so they have a good experience from the start with dental care. In addition, Dr Lowry completed a special program while in dental school at the University of North Carolina called BOHP (Baby Oral Health Program) which provided additional training in working with infants and small children.

Sealants

Dental sealants are recommended for helping prevent cavities in children before they have a chance to start. Both primary and permanent teeth can benefit from sealants and your dentist will evaluate for and recommend sealants based on the individual needs of your child. Sealants provide a way to seal the deep grooves in teeth, preventing cavities from forming in this area which is one of the most common starting points of decay.
